Better Impact: Ganbina
Ganbina is an innovative organisation dedicated to empowering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth through education, training, and employment initiatives. Based in Shepparton, Victoria, Ganbina has a unique mission: to enable young Indigenous Australians to build better futures for themselves and their communities by overcoming barriers to success.
Recently, our team had the privilege of collaborating with Ganbina to refine their strategic plan and align it with a comprehensive risk matrix. This effort is a critical step in ensuring Ganbina continues to deliver impactful programs while managing the risks that come with growth and change.
Ganbina’s mission is centred around creating sustainable change in the lives of Indigenous youth. By offering a range of programs – from scholarships and mentoring to career guidance and work experience opportunities – Ganbina supports young people in navigating the often-challenging journey from school to employment. This holistic approach is designed to help break the cycle of disadvantage and empower participants to pursue their goals with confidence.
Our work with Ganbina focused on reviewing and refining their strategic plan to ensure it remains aligned with their vision and the needs of the communities they serve. The updated strategic plan aims to enhance the organisation’s capacity to scale its programs, increase participation rates, and measure outcomes more effectively. This renewed focus will help Ganbina expand its reach and impact across more communities, ensuring that more young Indigenous Australians have the opportunity to succeed.
In developing the strategic plan, we also worked closely with Ganbina to create a risk matrix tailored to their unique operational context. This matrix identifies and categorises potential risks—ranging from financial and operational risks to reputational and compliance risks—allowing the organisation to proactively manage them.
Aligning the strategic plan with this risk matrix was an important exercise in balancing ambition with caution. It involved a deep dive into the organisation’s goals and priorities, alongside an assessment of the external environment and internal capabilities. The result is a plan that not only drives growth but also accounts for potential challenges, ensuring Ganbina remains resilient and adaptable in the face of uncertainty.
By aligning their strategic plan with a risk management framework, Ganbina is better positioned to achieve its objectives. The alignment ensures that as the organisation pursues its goals—such as expanding program offerings or increasing stakeholder engagement—it does so with a clear understanding of the risks involved and the strategies in place to mitigate them.
This strategic clarity is critical for any organisation operating in a dynamic and sometimes unpredictable environment, especially one like Ganbina that relies on partnerships, funding, and community trust to achieve its mission.
As Ganbina moves forward, the organisation’s focus remains on delivering high-quality programs that meet the evolving needs of Indigenous youth. The strategic plan and risk matrix we helped develop are now foundational tools that will guide their efforts over the coming years, ensuring they continue to empower young people to realise their potential.
We are proud to support Ganbina in this important work and look forward to seeing the organisation grow and thrive, making a lasting difference in the lives of Indigenous Australians.
