Better Impact: Youth Futures Network

Shaping Tomorrow: Spotlight on Youth Futures Network

At Spark Strategy, we are privileged to partner with organisations dedicated to transforming lives and driving systemic change. This month, we highlight the Youth Futures Network, a coalition of 16 organisations focused on empowering young people across New South Wales (NSW).

Who is the Youth Futures Network?

Youth Futures Network’s mission is clear: to improve career opportunities and employment experiences for all young people in NSW. With a history spanning more than two decades for many of its members, Youth Futures Network’s business model leverages local expertise to deliver Work Placement Coordination Services, connecting schools, industry, and communities to create meaningful pathways for youth.

By focusing on young people’s transition from school to work, Youth Futures Network addresses two pressing challenges:

  1. Helping Young People Thrive: Navigating the transition from education to employment is a significant hurdle for many young people, with barriers ranging from a lack of work-ready skills to insufficient access to local opportunities.
  2. Building the Workforce of Tomorrow: Industries face ongoing challenges in sourcing talent for their future workforce, a gap YFN works to bridge through collaborative, localized solutions.

The Strategic Context: Why Youth Futures Network’s Work Matters
  1. Youth Unemployment in NSW: In 2024, youth unemployment in NSW stood at 9.2%, significantly higher than the national average of 3.5% . This highlights the critical importance of initiatives like Youth Futures Network’s Work Placement Coordination Services, which provide young people with practical skills and pathways into employment.
  2. Regional Challenges: For young people in regional NSW, barriers to employment are particularly acute. Research shows that young people in rural areas are twice as likely to be disengaged from education or work compared to their urban counterparts .
  3. The Skills Gap:According to the National Skills Commission, 43% of employers in 2023 reported difficulty filling entry-level roles due to a lack of work-ready skills among applicants . Youth Futures Network’s targeted programs directly address this gap by equipping young people with the practical skills and connections they need to succeed.
Youth Futures Network’s Collaborative Approach

Youth Futures Network’s Chair describes their impact as rooted in its ability to forge connections:

“Our demonstrated track record in connecting and developing collaborative partnerships with Industry, Education, Community, and Government underpins our mission.”

This collaborative approach enables Youth Futures Network to deliver tailored, localised services, ensuring no young person is left behind, regardless of where they live in NSW. By linking schools with local industries, Youth Futures Network creates a pipeline of talent that benefits young people and businesses alike.
